Trey Mancini Named Aberdeen MVP

Trey Mancini Named Aberdeen MVP

PostPost #1 by ofahn » September 4th, 2013, 6:24 pm

Steve Melewski wrote a post today about Trey Mancini being named the Ironbirds MVP. Mancini's play certainly deserves it, but as a 21 YO college player he would be expected to perform better than the 19 and 20 YOs that normally populate a short season roster.

Mancini was one of the few college players that we drafted in the upper rounds this year. He profiles as a gap to gap doubles hitter with solid enough plate discipline to maintain a high OBP. At his age it's unrealistic to expect his HR power to improve dramatically.

For Trey to be considered a legitimate prospect he'll need to duplicate his Aberdeen performance in at least 200 or so ABs at Frederick next year. Of course, that assumes that he plays well enough at Delmarva to earn the promotion.

I don't understand giving a college guy so many at-bats in rookie ball. A Christian Walker type. Similar to the type of outfielders they like to draft, Hudson, Ruettiger, Davis, Mummey...not a lot of power.

It might have been because Aberdeen had a chance at the playoffs and Delmarva wasn't going anywhere.
