Orioles, Phillies Swap Minor Leaguers
By Steve Adams [March 24, 2013 at 11:56am CST]

The Orioles have acquired minor league right-hander Julio Rodriguez from the Phillies in exchange for outfielder Ronnie Welty, according to MLB.com's Brittany Ghiroli (on Twitter).

Rodriguez, who turned 21 in August, pitched to a 4.23 ERA with a 9.1 K/9 and 5.1 BB/9 in 134 innings for the Phillies' Double-A affiliate last season. He did not rank among Baseball America's Top 30 Phillies prospects, nor did he appear on MLB.com's list of Top 20 Phillies prospects.

The 25-year-old Welty has some experience at all three outfield positions but played right field exclusively in 2012. Last season, he batted .333/.373/.662 with 13 homers in 229 plate appearances across four levels. However, a great deal of those plate appearances came in Rookie ball and Class-A (both levels) as he rehabbed from an injury. In 37 games for Double-A Bowie, he batted .286/.303/.564. Like Rodriguez, he did not appear on his team's respective Top 30 and Top 20 prospects.

This was a good move for the farm system. Welty really didn't have a roster spot at AA or AAA because the Orioles will have at least two real OF prospects at both levels, and a lot veterans to feel the other spots. We've traded an extra piece for a pitcher that was dominant at A ball two years ago, but struggled a bit at AA where the hitters don't start swing on the on deck circle. His K/BB ratio reflects that.

He's still young enough to be a prospect at AA and could be a real find after Rick Peterson works his magic on him.

With the many outfielders in the organization, Welty was expendable. He can hit, but it appears consistent playing time for Ronnie was going to be tough, especially with Henry Urrutia now in the country. Julio Rodriguez seems like a good arm; He's been consistently over a strikeout per inning in the minors, even if he struggled a bit last year with command. If his arm is too wild to start, it seems like he would be dominant out of the bullpen.

Likely a good move just from a player development standpoint for both teams. Not sure either player will ever see much time in the majors but that is alright so long as each is now in a better position to have a shot at it. Or for that matter a slightly longer minor league career.
