Zach Davies 8/4 Delmarva Start

Zach Davies 8/4 Delmarva Start

PostPost #1 by adonijah1510 » August 4th, 2012, 1:42 pm

Will Zach contiue to struggle on the road tonight in Greensboro or will he put in a quality start as the season comes closer to a close? He's coming off of a 2 inning rain shortened game which wont show up on his stat sheet in which he threw 48 pitches in two inning giving up a double, walk, and single including a run scored. That was a game in which he fell behind 9 out of the 10 batters he faced. After struggling on the road this season with a losing record and giving up a batting average of .289 let's see if he can get it together and the Birds offense can put more runs up to help support their pitcher tonight.

All three mid season reports have Zach listed between 14-18th ranked in the organization. What's been so strong about him is his ability to mix a number of pitches and use them all effectively. He has progressed well to this point, and I think a solid off season of building some muscle onto his very small frame could make him a player to really watch in 2013.

He could quickly vault into the top 10.

Zach starts the game off with 3 up 3 down hitting 89 with his fastball in the first. Davies got 2 fly outs and one ground out to get out of the inning with just 13 pitches. Let's see if he can keep it up.

Davies raises his pitch count to 31 on a 18 pitch second over 4 batters. He's started the inning off with a 4 pitch ground out, the giving up a single to Smith. Zach then gets a K on Schultz allowing the runner to advance to second on pass ball with the K. He ends inning with a ground out to Starr using a 89 MPH fastball, a 79 MPH change up, and a curve. Davies is using great accuracy hitting the glove on almost every fastball great command. Delmarva is getting plenty of strike outs today Greensboro's Brice is on his game with over 100 K's on the season.

A ruff 3rd for Davies consisting of 30 pitches and 4 runs. After giving up a lead off infield single behind Davies, Sawyer then let's a passball to get runner to second followed by a fly out. Keys then bunts runner over to 3rd followed by a RBI single by Barnes. Sawyer allows a stolen base before Senne hits a 2 run homer on a 0-2 count. Davies then lost control a bit giving up a double on a 2-0 count, followed by a 4 pitch walk. Schultz came up on a 1-0 count and get a RBI single, Webb then over throws Sawyer at home allowing runners to advance. Davies ends the inning with a K, but the damage is done. The only thing I can say is that the homer would have been a out at Salisbury. Webb gets his second walk closing in on record for Birds making his number up to 82.

Davies comes back out in the 4th giving up a first pitch single, followed by a 2 pitch single. Thus getting the bullpen active again still throwing alot of balls. After the first two innings with amazing control just lost it so fast. He then gets a fielders choice on Key and then Barnes grounds out into a DP to end the inning. On a good note only a 9 pitch inning making his pitch count 70 on the game.

Davies makes it back out for the 5th after having the bullpen up twice in the game. He starts the inning off with a fly out, followed by a walk and a K of Smith. Minor then comes out to relieve Davies and brings in Wooten. Davies had a fastball 88-91, a change up 79, and a 73 mph curve. If you take away the 3rd its a solid efficient game, but if they were in Delmarva the 3rd would have ended sooner. Greensboro a hitters field helped them yet again and hurt Davies. Wooten ended the inning with a ground out.

Davies Final Line: 4.2 IP 8 H 4 ER 2 BB 3 K 1 HR

Wooten comes back in 7th with 24 pitches and giving up a run on a HR to that short right field fence. After a ten pitch K to start off inning, he then gives up the homer on a full count to Barnes. Comes back with a groundout and a 4 pitch K, hitting 87 on the gun with his fastball and 78 with his change. Strong showing for Wooten so far just like Davies that short fence only thing to hurt him.

Petersime comes in in relief using 18 pitches to get through inning givin up 1 run. After giving up a lead off single, he gets a ground out to Schultz moving the runner up. Nola gets a RBI moving Smith to 3rd but not coming home because of Webb's arn. Petersime gets a ground out to next batter but brings in a run, finishing up the inning with a K, hitting 92 on the gun with his fastball.

Wooten Final Line: 2.1 IP 1 H 1 ER 2 SO 1 HR

Great outing by Wooten very dominant only thing was that short fence.

Webb drew his 4th walk of the day simply amazing patience.

Delmarva had yet again alot of K's, no extra base hits, and ten men left on base. The big thing was walks today 4 by Webb being so patient at the plate and 7 hits everyone really pitching in making every chance count getting 7 runs on 7 hits. Starting pitching was solid, followed by another great effort by bullpen. Only thing hurting our pitches was the short right field fence. With only about 26 games left Birds still have alot of work to do to even get close to a playoff spot.
