Orioles Interested in Closer Francisco Cordero

Orioles Interested in Closer Francisco Cordero

PostPost #1 by Tucker Blair » January 16th, 2012, 6:01 pm

The Orioles have shown interest in Closer Francisco Cordero, according to Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun.

Cordero, 36, posted a 5-3 record with a 2.45 ERA, 1.109 WHIP and 37 Saves in 69.2 innings last season for the Cincinnati Reds. Over his career, he has 327 saves in thirteen seasons with the Rangers, Brewers and Reds. He has accumulated 150 saves over the past four seasons. However, It may be a bit worrisome how his K% has gradually decreased over the past few years (33.0%, 25.4%, 21.0%, 18.7%, 15.3%).

A signing of Cordero would potentially provide the Orioles with some depth behind Kevin Gregg and Jim Johnson. It also could provide the Orioles the chance to move Jim Johnson into the rotation. They could also attempt the move Gregg, Connolly speculates.

Please no. I just don't see the point honestly. Plus I am scared of his peripherals. He could be ready for a drop in production imo.

What do I have to do to make this team start behaving like a rational organization? Cut off some toes?

I guess you haven't noticed how absurd the rest of his posts are. Not surprised here. He's probably blown away by all of those "relevant" saves. Or maybe he's a good clubhouse guy.

It's one thing to have interest him and another to have interest in him as a closer. On a one year deal it could make some sense as they could trade him at the deadline if he is pitching well.

I can see that argument. But I still think they would be better off saving that cash for another investment since it seems ole petey still controls how much they spend

While Cordero might not be the most appetizing option to us, I think the implications of our interest are good. Looking for some help in the bullpen to get rid of dead weight like Gregg. I would just hope we don't go after a closer so Johnson can stay in that role. We do not need to go out and get someone just to try the Johnson as a starter experiment.
