#Orioles RF Nick Markakis underwent significant abdomen surgery on Thursday in Philly to repair a torn rectus abdominus muscle
Markakis is hopeful he will be able to be ready by Opening Day but will have a significantly lighter load in ST. Made initial plans w Buck
Markakis has played in 157 or more games in past 5 years. He hasnot been able to workout this offseason due to injury
Markakis said scar tissue was found during surgery as well as the extensive injury to the rectus abdominis muscle and a right abductor musc
He said he wont do anything for three weeks besides walk, Can then begin some light lifting and then some maybe by week 6 lt baseball act

I hope everything goes well with Nick. This is a potential big blow if he is hurt.
It also could explain some drop off in his numbers? Possible, but we will probably never know.

It also explains the Orioles interest in OF this off-season

Scar tissue was preventing Markakis tear from healing. He'd get to 80 percent and that's it. #orioles

We just found out:

Wasn't hurting more, just not improving so a 2nd MRI was done & that's when tear was discovered. Still docs didnt know extent until surgery
Markakis said doctor said the injuries -- rectus abdominis and an abductor that was nearly hanging off -- were more severe than thought

I don't think this is why they went after so many OF. I think DD just wants to have as much depth as possible at all positions in case situations like this occur.
