Chris Davis hits the DL

Chris Davis hits the DL

The Orioles received the results of Chris Davis' MRI today and decided to place him on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left oblique.
A corresponding roster move may not come until Tuesday, following another open date on the Orioles' schedule. They most likely will go with 24 players in Sunday's series finale against the Royals.

Obviously, this is a huge blow to the Orioles. There is currently no timetable, but hopefully he only misses up to a month. Ryan Flaherty and Nick Markakis are the only internal options to replace Davis, and Flaherty has no business being in the major leagues. My guess is Manny Machado will replace Davis' roster spot in a couple days.

1. Markakis to first?
2. Cruz to right?
3. Lough to left?
4. Young to DH?

This injury weakens the O's in several areas.

Rosters and roster management was one of the reasons for the Pearce demotion which caused the shortage of an available replacement to be on the roster with this unfortunate event of Chris Davis being injured.

The versatility of Ryan Flaherty and the promotion to the MLB Squad of Jemile Weeks makes the availability to have Nick Markakis to play first while leaving Flaherty on the bench as a Defensive replacement if the need comes to move Nick back to Right Field late In a game as Flaherty can come in to play a defensive first base.

If Ohlman, Urrutia or Adams had any type of normal play at Norfolk any one could be recalled to fill in but this is not the case. The bench spot could be filled by Ohlman as the backup catcher and allow Clevenger to play first but Ohlman is not even hitting his weight. Urrutia could be used as the outfielder to replace Nick but he has not grasped the reason for his demotion to AAA and is not a very good option either. Adams because of his lack of decent play is also not an option.

The Forty sits with several 15 Day DL players of which maybe Peguero or Almanzar moved to the Sixty or possibly return Almanzar to Boston and place Caleb Joseph on the forty to be promoted to Baltimore and play first, catch or DH.

I had thought at the beginning of the year with the team having so many of the fringe players without options that the team could get hamstrung going forward.

Joseph, Wieters, and Clevenger would all have options remaining at the catching position.
Flaherty, Machado, Weeks, Schoop have options on the infield.
Jones has options but is going no where but the remaining OF does not and this has become a problem.

The pitching staff has very few players with options and this is also an issue. Chen , Gonzalez, O'Day, and Webb are the only optional pitchers and they are not going anywhere either.

Can you tell me where you read or saw this statement:

Just curious, please do not bite off my head.

With Machado nearing a return from the DL, isn't it at all possible to simply slide Schoop to 1B, allow Weeks to handle 2B and keep everything else as is? I am not suggesting that Schoop would supply the run support you would hope for, just that it might make for a reasonable short term solution.

Christian Walker (Bowie) or even Chris Marrero (Norfolk) are also options. I can't see either being a resounding success. Though I would feel better about this than shuffling positions up and down the lineup.
