Keeping him on the roster all season is not be impossible. Finding a purpose to doing so might be a stretch.

Don posted his thoughts on Almanzar on twitter earlier:

Almanzar had mental blocks for years, wears heart on his sleeve, that needs to change for skills to flourish, maturity is a big hurdle.

Don Olsen ‏@Olsen_Don 3h
Almanzar has a thunder stick, but again can he adjust to the day to day life when almost nothing goes right 7 or 8 out of 10 at bats.

From the stats I looked at it looks like he is a butcher at 3rd base with a .920 career fielding percentage.

He is not highly athletic and does have some footwork problems there.

I guess I'm just puzzled. Who knows maybe Duquette drafted him because another team wanted him in some kind of trade scenario with the Orioles.

Some people really like the bat, while most believe he is a project that stills needs some time in the minors to fully develop. I lean towards the latter, and I think he is probably a backup plan in case they literally lose out on every free agent they wanted (that would be disappointing but not surprising I guess)

Apparently, Almanzar has allowed them to trade Valencia for Lough. IMO it's a step forward for the team.

Let's see what Mike Bordick and/or Bobby Dickerson can do with him.

I understand Almanzar has potential, and I'd love to have him in the organization, as he would be Baltimore's top third base prospect. But, at this point, he his a somewhat clumsy third baseman that hasn't touched AAA, didn't perform particularly great at AA, and has no one tool in particular that stands out. I'd love to work out a trade of Almanzar, but he's not anything close to Danny Valencia. At least Flaherty was very versatile when the Orioles drafted him and he CRUSHED AA pitching. I'd much rather sign Jeff Baker, and work out a trade with the Redsox.

Baker to a minor league contract as a 3B would be fine with me, but he doesn't have the glove to trust him for any period of time at 2B.

I agree just the corner positions. Drafting Michael Almanzar could lead to;

1. Putting a legit third base prospect in Baltimore's minor league system.
2. Getting a full-time outfielder under control for the next six years.
3. Signing Danny Valencia with more versatility (Jeff Baker).
