The Orioles announced that they claimed catcher Luis Martinez off of waivers from the Rangers. Baltimore's 40-man roster is full after claiming Martinez, who had been designated for assignment on December 26th.

Acquired by the Rangers from San Diego last offseason, Martinez appeared in ten games with Texas this past season. He spent most of the year at Triple-A, where he hit .270/.350/.386 in 247 plate appearances. The 27-year-old also appeared in 22 games with the Padres in 2011, his first campaign in the Major Leagues.

Because we may be getting ready to have THREE catchers on our 40 man. Expect one of the three backups to get shopped.

If we wanted three in the first place, why did we claim Luis Martinez?

They may think he's better than Exposito OR they believe they can get something for Exposito or Teagarden in a trade.

This would be the time line of Luis Martinez in the MLB.

I see he was added to San Diegos 40 Man Roster on November 19 2010
Optioned on 3/11/2011 by San Diego
Recalled on 9/02/2011 by San Diego
Designated for assignment then traded to Texas on 12/21/2011,
Optioned 3/31/2012 by Texas
Recalled 7/14/2012
Optioned 7/21/2012
Recalled 8/11/2012
Designated for assignment 12/26/2012
Claimed by Orioles 1/04/2013
So with all that info he seems to have one option remaining.
So we have a viable backup catcher on the 40 man roster that has an option remaining, this may be a good thing.

I hope Martinez and/or Exposito don't take time away from Caleb Joseph in AAA. He's a little old to be considered a prospect, but I remembered reading that he was always a good defensive catcher, and his bat finally came around at AA.

Yeah, I think it's a solid move. Exposito can't hit a major league fastball and I'm sure Martinez is at least a bit better at the plate.
