Delmon Young is he the right handed bat the Orioles need

Delmon Young is he the right handed bat the Orioles need

Young is going to be in his 27th year so its prime time for him. He can play left field and DH, balancing out what I perceive as a need in our offensive line-up. I want certainties heading into 2013, not question marks like Nolan Reimold.

From 2010-2012 Young has hit left handed pitching fairly well.
AB 488 .307 .347 .500 .847
AB 31 .387 .412 .613 1.025 at Camden Yards

I'd offer Young a 2 year deal because he fits our needs for the next two years at the very least. But I have no idea what Young is looking for especially after a good playoff year.

The Orioles were one of the worst teams in 2012 in scoring runs off of left handed pitching. Maybe it was just a coincidence but I'd rather not tempt fate again considering the number of left handed quality pitchers we will have to face.

This is a team that wants to focus on pitching, defense, and OBA. Young is, at BEST, challenged defensively in LF; so he should really be the RH part of a DH platoon. We have Reimold or Steve Pearce for that and they won't cost us "stupid money".

As I understand it, you're suggesting that we sign a bad defensive player that doesn't walk enough and has a questionable reputation to bat about 160 times against LHers since we would normally only face them about 25% of the time. I'm sorry, but that sounds like a desperation move that isn't necessary.

Delmon Young is no more than a platoon DH against LHP. He's a younger and less patient Jonny Gomes. We will need a platoon for left field and DH vs lefties. BUT, we have that between Conor Jackson, Danny Valencia, Steve Pearce, and Nolan Reimold. Delmon Young would not be a good signing.

That 1.025 at Camden Yards jumps out at me. If we get him for short money on a one year deal, it might be a great move IMHO 8-)

I'd give the Orioles all the money in my banking account if it meant they'd promise not to sign Delmon Young.

I'm saying, with my $27 and your $13, we might be able to make some progress my man.

Yes. Even last year the pitching staff was league average.

Perhaps Young is just a "natural" for Camden Yards. I really think he is a short term gamble worth taking. Just my two cents 8-)

Winning baseball games is always necessary. I look at the options on the current roster and shudder. The best being Nolan Reimold, the guy with a spinal injury. If they want us to believe 95 wins is possible making moves like these are necessary. His demands have to be within reason and his off-field character issues have to be addressed. And so far they have not improved this team.
