Orioles Re-Sign Koji Uehara

The Orioles have agreed to terms with Koji Uehara, their best relief pitcher for much of last season, on a one-year deal with a vesting option for the 2012 season, according to a source familiar with the negotiations.

The exact terms aren't known, but the option won't be hard to obtain if Uehara is able to stay healthy through the majority of the season. The contract also includes some escalator clauses depending on whether Uehara is the Orioles' closer.

Well teams continue to throw out the 95 MPH late inning guys, it is a change of pace. If he locates his pitches and throws strikes, he can at least be effective.

They also have a deal on the table that I am surprised Kevin Gregg did not sign as soon as it was given. It was a two year deal that could pay more than Uehara. They were discussing a mutual option for 2013 that could be the key to the deal.

Yeah, I've read that it was a 2 year deal worth 8-10 MM. I think that's an inefficient deal, but it's not exactly one that would cripple the organization. If that deal is really on the table, Gregg probably ends up coming back to it unless some team gets desperate for a 3.5 ERA closer.

Koji, Gonzo, Gregg and Jim Johnson is the making of a very strong, albeit somewhat pricey, bullpen.
