Position Player of the Week – Dariel Alvarez, CF (AA, Bowie)
.480/.500/.880 with 4 2B, 2 HR, 7 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
Alvarez has been impressive at the plate in 2014, displaying a shorter stroke and cutting back on the swing and misses. He has even looked good in CF, displaying average range and solid instincts to go along with a plus arm. The rust looks to be fully shaken off, and he is handling AA rather well in his second stint there.
Starting Pitcher of the Week – Branden Kline, RHP (A+, Frederick)
7.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 3 K
Kline displayed his best stuff against a lineup consisting of studs such as Joey Gallo, Nick Williams and Jorge Alfaro. While I think his eventual role is a potential 7th inning reliever, Kline displayed that with his optimized mechanics and stuff, he can provide quality innings. He has decent extension from a high 3/4th arm-slot, nearly over the top. With his solid-average power curve, he certainly has potential to be a big league arm.
Relief Pitcher of the Week – Jon Keller, RHP (A, Delmarva)
3.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K
I saw Keller two weekends ago, and he was touching 96 mph out the pen with some life. It’s not shocking to see him starting to have some success, as the fastball is plus and a true weapon. I will sing it all year; keep an eye out for Keller and his big-time arsenal.
