ON Top 50 Prospects 2013 – #48: Mychal Givens

Published by Jordan Tuwiner on November 8, 2012
← #49 – Ashur Tolliver
#47 – Zach Clark →

Background

Mychal Givens is finally a pitcher after three years of injuries and struggles as a hitter. He hit just .243 for the Shorebirds last season and didn’t project to stick at shortstop.

Scouting Report

Givens consistently pumped 96 mph off the mound in high school and many scouts believed he was a better prospect as a pitcher than as a hitter.

On top of a fastball that sits 93-96 mph and touches 98, Givens has shown the makings of an above-average power breaking and also throws a changeup.

He is now equivalent to a college pitcher, and understands the rigors of a minor league season. The timing of his move to the mound seems like a good one.

Future

Givens is currently in Sarasota at instructional league working as a pitcher. Depending on how quickly he progresses as a pitcher will determine whether he opens 2013 in Delmarva or participates in extended spring training.

With a power fastball and breaking ball combo, Givens has the kind of stuff you look for in a back end reliever. Givens progression as a pitcher is going to be something to follow closely over the next few season as he looks to show what made scouts believe he could have been a first round pick as a pitcher.
