Most are fully aware of prospects such as Manny Machado and Dylan Bundy. However, there are other players on the rise throughout the Orioles system.
The Outfield seems to be on the rise in the first half of 2012.
Aberdeen – OF Roderick Bernadina
I’ve had the pleasure of watching Roderick play a few times this year. He has a quick swing and a lot of raw talent. He’s probably the most impressive player on the Ironbirds’ roster, and one of the youngest too. Over the weekend I watched him go 3-4 with 3 of the hardest hit line drives I’ve seen in a while. Keep an eye on the cousin of Roger Bernadina, he could be a legitimate player in the future. From Don: “If he establishes ability to sit on pitches and maintain patience at the plate, Roderick could be dangerous.”
Delmarva – OF Brenden Webb
Brenden is the king of getting on base. He currently is 2nd in the SALLY league with 62 BB, and 4th with a .424 OBP. His OBP last season was .344. Obviously the progression has been noted this season, as Orioles Nation voted him the May POTM . The power is starting to come around as well, with 15 Doubles and 8 HR. Add that with his cannon-arm and he becomes a player to focus on at Delmarva.
Frederick - OF Johnny Ruettiger
Ruettiger started the year at Delmarva. Once he dominated there, he moved onto Frederick. After making some adjustments, he’s quickly become on of the most exciting players to watch on the team. I wrote an in-depth piece yesterday.
Bowie – LHP Michael Belfiore
Belfiore was acquired from Arizona in the Josh Bell trade. The former 1st round pick has taken the bull by the horns since arriving. He’s been a dominant force for the Baysox bullpen. Since joining, he has a 2.01 ERA in 22.1 innings pitched with an 8.5 K/9. Belfiore could become a real option for the Orioles bullpen down the road.
Norfolk - OF L.J. Hoes
While the talk of AAA has been Xavier Avery, don’t forget about Mr. Hoes. Starting out the year at AA Bowie, he quickly forced his way to Norfolk by hitting .265/.368/.372. Since joining Norfolk? Just a .292/.345/.406 batting line. I really like what he has been doing with the bat, and the compact contact swing is really evident. He’s one of the guys at Norfolk carrying that offense right now.
