With the fourth pick in the 2012 MLB Draft, the Baltimore Orioles have selected Kevin Gausman, RHP, Louisiana State University.
Height/Weight: 6-foot-4, 185 pounds
School: Louisiana State University
Gausman is 11-1 with a 2.72 ERA and 158 strikeouts in 115.2 innings for LSU this season. LSU is still playing in the Super Regionals and will play the winner of UCF and Stony Brook.
He has an easy arm action, high leg kick, and a projectable body that could add 15-20 pounds.
Assuming he signs, the Orioles have added a fairly developed, high ceiling power pitcher to the system.
Don’s Thoughts: What you have in Gausman is the ability to play big when the lights are on him. He digs down inside to pitch better against the heart of the order, and the very best hitters bring the best out of him.
His plane/arm angle could produce three pitches with swing and miss potential with improved command. Out of the college ranks, he has the best combination of ceiling and risk out of the top tier of arms. If everything falls inline, he could be a fast moving prospect that would be a lethal power right handed pitcher in the rotation.
