After selecting Tim Berry out of San Marcos HS (CA) in 2009, the Orioles returned to the same school drafting RHP Sebastian Vader with their 18th round pick of the 2010 draft. Vader, a 6′ 3″ projectable right hander, was signed for an over-slot bonus of $150,000. A quarterback in high school, Vader is athletic, moves well off the mound and has a good pitcher’s frame.
His fastball sits in the 87-90 mph range with some slight late movement. It’s a below-average pitch though his deceptive delivery helps it play up. His slider sits in the 79-81 mph range and shows a lot of potential with two-plane break and some late bite. He is somewhat wiry now but should be able to add 10-15 more pounds as he continues to fill out. If he learns to drive off the mound more and really extend his follow through, he should see added fastball velocity.
Vader should open 2011 in extended spring training and find himself in Aberdeen’s rotation later in the year. His ceiling is that of a #4-5 starter.
