ON Top 50 Prospects – #49: Dudley Leonora

Published by Jordan Tuwiner on September 22, 2010

Dudley Leonora was one of two GCL international prospects that landed on most radars this season, the other being Jonathan Schoop. Leonora isn’t quite the prospect Schoop is at this point, but there are still reasons to get excited about this 18 year old from Curacao.

Leonora is a patient hitter with quick wrists, who should post good contact rates as he moves through the system. He shows good pitch recognition and the ability to hit the ball where it’s pitched. He’s a good defender that can play third or second base. He profiles as a third baseman going forward as his above-average arm strength plays well there. He displays good instincts in the field and if you see him play, he’s bound to make a play that will “wow” you. He may be blocked at third by someone else in the system which could force him to second base sooner rather than later. If he does end up at second, he has the speed to play well there and can make the quick throws, especially on double plays.

He may be a good contact hitter, but right now, a lot of the contact he’s making is resulting in ground balls. Leonora has a slight pause and some unnecessary movement before he launches his swing, which causes timing problems. Leonora would benefit greatly by using his lower body more. Making these adjustments and posting good numbers next season will push Leonora up this list. He has room to add 7-12 lbs. which should allow him to hit for more power than he has thus far.
