Caleb Joseph got the start at first base tonight in a game against the Binghamton Mets. I’m trying to find more information on the situation, but I have a hunch. Joseph is by far the best position prospect on the Baysox, and in my mind is a better prospect than Brandon Snyder. With Matt Wieters behind the plate, Joseph will struggle to find playing time at his natural position. Joseph is athletic enough to handle 1B, it will be interesting to see how long he plays there. I’ll be on the lookout.

Interesting, is he actually capable of playing 1B on a full time basis?
He played SS in college, I believe, so yes.
The question, of course, is whether or not his bat will play at 1B. Looking at his splits, he’s really struggled against RHP this year (.219/.320/.295) and his career (.256/.317/.370), so I have my concerns, though hopefully there will be some natural regression in that profile. Still, it definitely can’t hurt to get him some work at 1B on days he’s not scheduled to catch. More at bats, and flexibility is most always a good thing.
Excellent point, it’ll be interesting to see how many days he plays there. Thanks for pointing out the splits!
