Prospect Stock Market – April 2010

Published by Jordan Tuwiner on May 3, 2010 | 1 Response

This will be a regular feature at the end of each month. Let me know what you think.

Stock Up

Garabez Rosa – While Rosa’s plate discipline is well below-average, he has some serious pop in his bat. He’s already mashed 12 doubles this season and has a .200 ISO.

Tyler Kolodny – He’s cooled down since winning the Sally League player of the week in the first week of the season, but he still has a .972 OPS on the season with 6 home runs.

Jake Cowan – Along with Ryan Berry, Cowan has been the most consistent pitcher on the Delmarva pitching staff. He has 29 strikeouts in 30 IP. It would be nice to see him lower the amount of walks (14).

Ryan Berry - Berry has been the most complete pitcher for the Shorebirds, with only 6 walks in 29.1 innings. With a 1.23 WHIP and 26 strikeouts, don’t be surprised to see Berry promoted to Frederick in the next few weeks.

L.J. Hoes - As the second youngest player in the Carolina League, Hoes has 17 walks compared to just 11 strikeouts. He’s batting .284 and has a .408 OBP.

Billy Rowell – Many people have given up hope, but Rowell has responded by batting .284 with a .840 OPS.

Ronnie Welty - The 24 strikeouts in 71 at-bats aren’t pretty, but the 6 home runs and .927 OPS are.

Robbie Widlansky - After winning the Carolina League batting title last season with Frederick, Widlansky has continued to hit. He’s batting .339 for the Baysox with a 1-1 BB/K ratio and a .889 OPS.

Tim Bascom – A questionable fourth round draft pick in 2007, Bascom has a 2.28 ERA with a 1.18 WHIP for Bowie this season.

Jake Arrieta – Leading the system in ERA, WHIP, wins and IP, Arrieta is making the Orioles think long and hard about promoting him to the big league rotation.

Stock Down

Tony Butler – With 15 walks in 16 IP, it’s clear that Butler is largely being affected by his recent arm injuries. He’s running out of time to turn things around.

Bobby Bundy - After being left out of the crowded Delmarva rotation, Bundy has struggled out of the pen. He allowed 12 hits, 8 ER and 6 walks in 10 innings.

Caleb Joseph – After a hot start out of the gate, Joseph is batting just .196 with a .533 OPS.

Pedro Florimon Jr. - Usually known for his defense, Florimon showed signs of potential with his bat last season for Frederick. He hasn’t been strong in either area this season, batting just .191 with a team leading 8 errors.

Chorye Spoone – He’s always struggled with control, but his 18-7 BB/K ratio is ugly. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him in the pen soon.

Josh Bell - Bell hasn’t been good on offense or defense. He has 6 errors and a 2-23 BB/K ratio, hopefully he gets out of this slump soon.

Brandon Snyder – Snyder’s batting just .205 but does have a .311 OBP due to 10 walks.

Brandon Erbe - From the start of the season I said that Erbe should have started back with Bowie. Instead, the Orioles moved him up to Norfolk where he has an 8.35 ERA.
